Little Things Show

I’m busy finishing my paintings for the annual “Little Things 12” show at the Guardino gallery on Alberta.  This long running holiday show features small pieces of artwork (7″x7″ or under) and is a perfect place to find gifts for the holidays because it’s a cash and carry sale.  I’m creating 30 pieces of original encaustic artwork for this show, so if you’ve ever wanted to purchase one of my paintings this would be a great time to do so.  Make sure to come to the reception though, because all this affordable work will fly out the door!

When: November 23rd – December 25th
Where:
2939 NE Alberta, Portland, OR 97211 (corner of NE 30 and NE Alberta)
503 281-9048 • www.guardinogallery.com

Street Car Loop Celebration

This month is going to be busy because I have 3 vending opportunities coming up.  I’m doing the First Thursday Street Gallery on the 6th like I do every month, I’m vending at Hump Day again on the 12th, and now I’m also participating in the celebration of Portland’s new street car loop.  The newest line, the Central Loop, will have it’s first run on September 22nd and to celebrate it’s opening there will be activities and events at each stop along the way.  I will be vending from 11am-5pm at the Urban Art Network’s Art Fair at NW 11th & Northrup, so hop on the street car and come on down!

For more information about the event and the activities at all the stops visit: http://www.portlandstreetcar.org/

Where: NW 11th and Northrup

When: Saturday September 22nd, 11am-5pm

Peace! Chantel

On the Edge: The Launchpad’s Last Group Show

For those of you that have followed my art journey from the beginning you might remember that the first time I showed my art in public, apart from class exhibitions in college, was in the Launchpad’s “Facing Fear” show in 2010, and again shortly after during their big crazy 2011 “Portland Love Show”.  Their tag line: “featuring new work by local emerging artists” was also their mission.  They hosted huge group shows and allowed many people to show for the very first time, including myself.  Even their artist contracts were educational, with a blurb at the bottom explaining what a basic contract should include, and encouraged new artists to reuse the contract for other shows if needed, and to not allow themselves to be taken advantage of.  All really helpful stuff when you’re first getting started and don’t know what your rights as an artist are.

The Launchpad is closing for good and having one last big group show to celebrate and wrap things up.  “On the Edge” is a group show about transition and being on the cusp of change.  If you want to come and see one last big show at the Launchpad before it closes it’s doors for good, come to the opening on Friday, July 6th, 6pm-12am.  The show will be up from July 6th to the 27th if you can’t come to the opening or like to check out art without the crowds.  I’m submitting one of the first paintings I completed when I started this art journey back in 2010 because not only does the painting itself resemble being out of the edge of the world, but I was still of the cusp of becoming an artist at the time.  Thanks to a gallery that gave a first-timer a chance to see her art hung in public, I slowly grew confidence in myself and my work and transitioned into a full time artist.  Getting your foot in the door of the art world can be hard, and the Launchpad helped new artists with that first step.  Portland was lucky to have a space like that, and they will be missed.  Good luck to the staff in all your future endeavors!

Fundraiser for: Hump Day

I wanted to get out the word about a fundraiser I’m attending on Friday.  The nonprofit Creative Collaborations is throwing a fundraising event June 29th at Salmon Street Studios so that a new monthly community marketplace can be launched on the second Wednesday of every month, starting July the 11th. This marketplace will allow artists, performers and all creative entrepreneurs to show and sell their work without charge.  I am planning on being a participating vendor if the fundraiser is successful, but they need to raise $1500 to get the ball rolling and get a private lot for the art fair at Water Ave & Salmon St right next to the waterfront.  The Rogue will be providing beer and the Montage is providing food, and there will be lots of musical entertainment.  There is a $5-10 sliding scale fee at the door and it is a “21 and over” event.  Come by and help a new Portland art event get it’s start!

Portland Open Studios

As many of you already know I’ve been accepted into the Portland Open Studios tour for 2012!  For those of you that aren’t familiar with the POS tours, it’s where participating artists open their studios to the public during the two middle weekends in October and give people a behind the scenes look at how they make their art.  I’m really excited for this because it was the POS tour from 2010 that got me started on this art path in the first place.  It gave me ideas for pieces, supply contact information, studio organization ideas, and great technique advice.  I’ve gone the last two years as a visitor and loved it so it will be interesting to be on the other side this year.

The tour runs from October 13th-14th, and 20th-21th from 10am-5pm each day.  To visit the studios you need to purchase a tour guide which serves as your ticket.  Tour guides include a map of all the studios and a brochure of the participating artists’ work.  Each tour guide is $15 and  is good for two adults and kids under 18.  One tour guide is good for all four days.  They are not available for purchase yet, but I’ll send out a blog post reminder when they are.  I will have some for sale so you can always contact me,  or you can check at these retailers who sold tour guides for 2011.  For more information check out the Tour Information page.  I know it’s really far in advance and I will remind people as the dates get closer, but I thought I’d give people the heads up in case they wanted to plan some local-artist-goodness into their fall schedules.  Hope to see you then!

Peace!

Holocaust Center Online Auction

The Oregon Holocaust Resource Center is having an online auction which I’m excited to be participating in as a donating artist.

“The auction will run from February 6, 2012 to February 19, 2012, with proceeds going to Oregon Holocaust Resource Center in order to support our vital programs. Auction items range from exotic vacation getaways to donated items guaranteed to delight and surprise. So, tell your friends, family, community. Let the bidding begin!”     -from the OHRC auction page

My donated piece is a small encaustic painting with an impression of a real gingko leaf.  I wanted to donate this piece when I learned of the auction because gingko trees are known as survivors.  They are one of the oldest living species, having been through several ice ages, and even survived the atomic bomb at Hiroshima.  Therefore the gingko tree is known as the “bearer of hope” and is a symbol of peace and longevity.  I couldn’t think of a more fitting painting to donate to the Holocaust Center.  Click here to visit the page for my painting, “Gingko #1” and maybe place a bid yourself!

Come to Your Senses

I’m very excited to announce that I’m in an encaustic art show that will be held at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, where I will be showing three pieces from my Clearwings Series.  This is will be one of the most public places my work has shown, and I’m so proud that I’m giving my little paintings new frames just for the occasion.  This show will also hang longer than any other show I’ve been in, so I’m hoping that this will create more public interest in my work.  Here are the details for the show:

The show will hang from January 5th to March 31st.

There will be a reception for the show on February 2nd, which is the First Thursday of the month.

The show is being held in the Portland Center for the Performing ArtsClick here to get directions.

This show is being run by the fabulous Kelly Williams, and this show blurb below  is taken from her Facebook page.
“This work focuses not only on the physical senses—the obvious visual, the feel, even the scent of the medium—but also the sense of self. It is a reflection of how the artists represent their authentic selves at some level? Reconnecting to center, finding truths, having epiphanies, truly ‘coming to your senses’ are all addressed in this wide range of artwork.

Encaustic paint is a sensory medium and experience. This form of painting originated in ancient Greece and Egypt. The paint is beeswax based and uses multiple heat methods to fuse each applied layer of molten paint. Contemporary artists have employed modern methods and have incorporated many diverse backgrounds to bring this lost art of painting back into the mainstream.”

4th Annual Big 200 Show

I’m excited to say that this is the first year I’m participating in the Big 200 (previously Big 100) art show!  It’s actually more than 200 artists now, so the show should be huge!  Each artist creates amazing work using 5-10 8×8 wood panels that will be displayed in a huge grid of creative energy.  Some of Portland’s best artists are participating but since the artist names aren’t displayed you don’t know whose piece is whose until you buy it, so you could walk away with some very sought after work for only $40 a piece!

This show is a benefit to the Oregon Food Bank, so bring your cans of food and help make someone’s holiday season more merry.  Come support local artists this year while getting your holiday shopping done and feel good about your purchases.  Maybe you’ve been very good this year and should pick yourself up some brand new original artwork to enjoy on your wall.

The show is at the Settlement Galleries in the Pioneer Place Mall in downtown Portland (700 SW 5th Ave, in the Atrium Building on the third floor).  The opening reception is on December 10th from 2-10pm so be sure to come and have your pick of the artwork.  If you pay in cash you can carry your piece out that night.  So to summarize here is the show flyer:
